PROJECT
“I PLAY WHAT I AM. I PLAY MINGUS”
To honour the memory of the great composer and bass player Charles Mingus, in his hundredth anniversary with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture, the International Music Festival Foundation announces a contest for young composers on chosen tracks, as commentary to the graphic novel written by journalist Flavio Massarutto and designed by graphic designer Pasquale Todisco (Squaz). The purpose of the project is to create an original music programme for jazz orchestra which will have composers inspired by the music of Charles Mingus. The project calls for the selection of 10 artists who will participate to the artistic residency with proper qualifications and an adequate level of preparation on composition and arrangement of jazz orchestra.

Upon registering, a curriculum vitae will be required, in addition to listing previous musical experience and a track composed and arranged by the candidate must be attached, including a orchestral “score” and the corresponding midi or audio (mp3) version. In relation to the forwarded materials, a committee composed of an art director and famous orchestra professors will choose 10 artists to be part of a 3-day workshop during the orchestra trials.

The chosen artists will be followed by a tutor during their artistic residency, chosen among major jazz music arrangers nationwide. No participation fee is required. The application and enclosed materials must be sent by SEPTEMBER 9, 2022.

The orchestral trials will be held early in October, the first absolute and possible replicas will be held in November.
